This coming Sunday, ten years after The New Group's premiere of Marc Wolf's OBIE award-winning solo documentary play, Another American: Asking and Telling, we revisit this influential piece in the context of the revived debate about the military's policy barring gays from serving in the military. Marc Wolf will perform excerpts from the play and discuss with a panel the state of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and ways to use the documentary form creatively to encourage change.

Another American: Asking and Telling, written and performed by Marc Wolf and directed by Joe Mantello, premiered at The New Group on December 7th, 1999 and ran until February 6th, 2000. The New York Times called Another American "a tour-de-force portrayal... Marc Wolf is a brilliant artist. There is an exceptional actor at work here."
Marc Wolf performed his solo-show The Road Home: Re-Membering America at the Huntington Theatre and Geva Theatre, directed by David Schweizer. He received an OBIE and was nominated for the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Another American: Asking and Telling at The New Group. He also performed Another American at Mark Taper Forum (Garland Award), Seattle Repertory Theatre, McCarter Theatre, Trinity Repertory Theatre, The Studio Theatre, Washington D.C. (Helen Hayes Award, GLAAD Award), Baltimore Center Stage, About Face Theatre (Jeff Nomination), New Conservatory Theatre (Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award), Boston Theatre Works (IRNE Award), New York Stage & Film, and Provincetown Repertory Theatre. Other New York appearances include Max in Bent at HERE, Platonov in Wild Honey at Synchronicity Space. Mr. Wolf played the role of Daniel Rivnine in the east-coast premiere of Itamar Moses' Outrage at the Wilma Theatre. On television, appearances on "The Sopranos", "Law & Order", and Brent Lawrence/Marian Crane on "Guiding Light". Another American: Asking and Telling is published in Political Stages: Plays that Shaped a Century (Applause Books).
Bob Vorlicky is a professor of Theatre Studies and Coordinator of the Honors Program in the Department of Drama, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. He is the author of Act Like a Man: Challenging Masculinities in American Drama, winner of the CHOICE Award for Outstanding Academic Publication; editor of Tony Kushner in Conversation; and From Inner Worlds to Outer Space: The Multimedia Performances of Dan Kwong (all published by the University of Michigan Press). He edits the Critical Performances series at Michigan. He is a past president of the international American Theatre and Drama Society (1999-2002). He publishes widely and speaks nationally and internationally on U.S. drama, performance, and theory. He is the dramaturg of a new musical, Con-Man, inspired by Melville’s last novel, The Confidence Man, which will have its west coast workshop premiere in Los Angeles, Spring 2010.
Janice Paran is a New Jersey-based dramaturg and writer and an Artistic Associate of the Sundance Institute Theatre Program, assisting producing artistic director Philip Himberg in short- and long-range artistic planning and serving frequently as a senior dramaturg for the Sundance Theatre Labs. She was the Director of Play Development at McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton, NJ from 1991 to 2005. She has worked closely with numerous writers and artists, including The Civilians, Annie Baker, Nilo Cruz, Christopher Durang, Stephen Dietz, Beth Henley, Emily Mann, Dael Orlandersmith, Polly Pen, Regina Taylor, Stephen Wadsworth, Tracey Scott Wilson, and Doug Wright in the development of new work for the theatre. Recent projects include You Better Sit Down: Tales from My Parents’ Divorce (co-writer) and Motherhood Out Loud (Hartford Stage). She is an artistic advisor to the Weston Playhouse Theatre Company in Weston, Vermont and a site visitor for the Philadelphia Theatre Initiative. She teaches in Princeton University’s Program in Theater, and she holds M.F.A. degrees from Catholic University and the Yale School of Drama.
David Hall joined Servicemembers Legal Defense Network in 2006 and currently serves as the organization's Development Director and Information Technology Manager. David is also a former U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant. He joined the Air Force, following in the footsteps of his father and step-father, who each served over 20 years in the Air Force. After basic training, Hall graduated from tech school with the second-highest score in his class and was assigned to the 27th Fighter Squadron at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia. At Langley, Hall was one of the top airmen in his flight. In March 2002, Hall received a coveted slot to train to be a pilot; at the time Hall received this honor, he had the highest ranking of all the Air Force ROTC juniors in his detachment. In recognition of his talent and dedication, Hall was named a Cadet Captain and flight commander, soon advancing to the position of Operations Officer, Cadet Major, another leadership position. Following his discharge under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," Hall became a plaintiff in SLDN's constitutional challenge to the government's ban on open service.
